16 Reasons to Try Red Light Therapy

Red light therapy has numerous potential benefits, and incorporating it into your self-care routine could offer a range of positive effects.

Inflammation is a significant concern in society due to its association with a variety of health issues, including illness, disease, and declines in mental health. Red light therapy is a treatment option that has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its ability to reduce inflammation.

One of the benefits of red light therapy is that it can be administered over the entire body using a full-body red light therapy bed, which allows for the anti-inflammatory effects to be felt from head to toe without the need for medication.

At the cellular level, red light therapy helps damaged cells to repair more quickly and efficiently, while also promoting the elimination of toxins, which can contribute to inflammation.

Near-infrared light has the ability to penetrate deep into the tissues of the body, stimulating the cells in muscles, nerves, and bones to release nitric oxide. This chemical process can provide relief from pain. In addition, red light therapy can promote the production of endorphins, which are natural pain-relieving substances in the body.

The combination of these effects, along with the anti-inflammatory and cellular repair benefits of red light therapy, can help the body to better heal and recover from conditions such as fibromyalgia, arthritis, traumatic brain injury, and neuropathy. Red light therapy has been shown to be effective in improving symptoms of these conditions.

3. Drug-Free, Without Side Effects

Red light therapy involves the use of specific wavelengths of non-harmful red and near-infrared light. This treatment is comfortable and relaxing, and it does not produce excessive heat or cause burns.

Red light therapy sessions can promote overall health without causing negative side effects.

4. It Is Safe

If you are seeking an alternative to medications for managing pain and inflammation, consider trying red light therapy. This treatment is a natural and safe way to improve your health and well-being without causing negative side effects like liver damage, stomach irritation, constipation, and other common side-effects from drug-induced pain relief.

Red light therapy can provide whole-body healing without any of these risks, making it a potentially more effective and healthier option for managing pain and inflammation.

Red light therapy has been shown to improve endurance and athletic performance, allowing athletes to train harder and longer. Many Olympic and top-level athletes use red light therapy to enhance their training, and some have even gone to great lengths to ensure that they have access to this treatment during competitions.

For example, a certain U.S. Olympic team had a red light therapy bed shipped to the Rio Olympics in 2016, and the Secretary of State had to become involved to ensure that the cargo was released from customs in time for the athletes to use it.

In addition to improving athletic performance during training, red light therapy can also facilitate post-exercise recovery, helping athletes to recover more quickly and efficiently after intense workouts.

Red light therapy can help athletes to run faster and recover more quickly after intense workouts. The improved circulation and reduced inflammation resulting from red light therapy treatment can accelerate recovery times, allowing athletes to train harder and more frequently.

A short session of red light therapy after a workout can help to reduce inflammation, alleviate sore muscles, and support the recovery process, enabling athletes to bounce back more quickly and be ready for their next training session.

Red light therapy offers a wide range of benefits for the skin. Many estheticians, who are among the early adopters of red light technology, now offer red light therapy treatments as part of their services. They recognize that adding red light therapy to skincare routines can enhance the results of these treatments.

Red light therapy can help to plump and repair the skin without the need for injections or medication. The red light spectrum penetrates about half an inch into the skin, increasing circulation and reducing inflammation, which can trigger healing at the cellular level.

Some of the other skin benefits associated with red light therapy include boosting collagen production, reversing sun damage, soothing eczema and acne, reducing the appearance of fine lines, fading scars, and even skin tone. Red light therapy can also be used to promote wound healing and soothe burns.

Red light therapy has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its ability to increase circulation in the body. Scientific research has demonstrated that red light therapy can increase the size of blood vessels and stimulate the growth of new, small blood vessels called capillaries.

The combination of increased circulation and enhanced cellular oxygen absorption provided by red light therapy can help to speed up wound healing and reduce inflammation. Areas of the body that are prone to poor circulation, such as the lower legs and feet, can particularly benefit from red light therapy treatments.

9. Relaxation

Red light therapy treatments in a bed can be a relaxing and meditative experience, providing a rare opportunity to spend 20 quiet minutes lying down in a comfortable, warm (but not hot) environment without any disruptions.

These sessions are typically as short as 20 minutes, but can still be long enough to allow you to take a power nap and shake off the stress of the day.

Red light therapy has been shown to be effective in promoting weight loss, with some research indicating that the fat loss rate can nearly double when combined with diet and exercise.

If you are working on weight loss, red light therapy may be able to help you reach your goals more quickly. In addition to its weight loss benefits, red light therapy is also the only scientifically proven method for reducing cellulite.

When used in combination with massage, red light therapy has been shown to lead to a 71% reduction in cellulite.

11. Reduce Feelings of Anxiety & Depression

According to research, red light therapy may be able to bring about measurable improvements in conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and anxiety, as well as in lifestyle factors that can impact mental health, such as sleep and stress.

Red light therapy has the ability to enhance energy production at the cellular level, which can lead to improved function of the entire body. If you suffer from chronic fatigue, consistent red light therapy treatments may be able to dramatically improve your symptoms.

Red light therapy is known to increase endurance and energy levels, making it a potentially effective treatment option for those who struggle with fatigue.

There are few things that can compare to the benefits of a good night’s sleep, and many people who use red light therapy report that they experience consistently better and deeper sleep as one of the first benefits they notice.

Improved sleep can create a strong foundation for healing and feeling better overall.

Near-infrared light has the ability to pass through bone and reach the tissues of the brain.

Red light therapy treatments that use near-infrared light can stimulate, regenerate, and preserve brain tissue and neurons while also reducing inflammation, which can be helpful in the treatment of mild traumatic brain injury.

Red light therapy treatments can help to support brain health by improving blood flow and oxygenation, promoting the growth of new neurons, protecting neurons from damage, reducing inflammation, and repairing cells.

These effects can in turn lead to improved memory, faster learning, and an ability to process complex problems more quickly.

Oxidative stress is a state in which there is an imbalance between the levels of free radicals and antioxidants in the body. Free radicals are highly reactive molecules that can cause damage to proteins, fatty tissue, and DNA, leading to impaired cellular function and even programmed cell death (apoptosis).

Prolonged exposure to oxidative stress has been linked to a range of diseases, including diabetes, cancer, inflammatory conditions, and neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. Oxidative stress is also believed to play a role in the aging process, including the loss of collagen and elasticity in the skin, which can lead to wrinkles.

Red light therapy has the ability to reverse oxidative stress and trigger repair at the cellular level, which can help to reduce the negative effects of this process.

You get all of the benefits!

Red light therapy may sound like an ideal treatment option with a wide range of benefits, but it is not too good to be true.

It requires a bit of upfront investment in terms of time, with a few sessions per week for a few weeks, continued maintenance can be achieved with just one session per week.

This means that you can continue to enjoy all of the benefits of red light therapy with minimal ongoing effort.

If you are using red light therapy to improve your skin tone, minimize the visible signs of aging, and heal sun damage, you can expect to undergo red light therapy in 15-minute sessions, 3 to 5 times each week for one to four months.

Then once a week as maintenance.
